Women on the Net
According to data compiled by Media Metrix (www.mediametrix.com) based on
55,000 home and business users, 50.4 percent of U.S. Internet users in May
were women.
Among other findings:
- Teen-age girls represent the fastest-growing age group. There were more than
4.4 million girls ages 12-17 online in May, a 126 percent increase from about
2 million a year earlier.
- The number of women ages 18-24 online decreased 4.5 percent, possibly
indicating more interest in college and early career development, researchers
said.
- The number of female Internet users ages 55 and over grew by 110 percent,
though they represent only 4.4 percent of the overall online population.
In line with this is a small item I read in the recent New Yorker magazine. A
young man who started by helping his mother’s women bridge partners get
online has turned the idea into a growing business. Older women it seems are
more willing to ask for help with the intricacies of the Net; while their
hubbies are reluctant to venture into techno-territory for fear of seeming
stupid. His entire customer base now is grey-haired ladies! who page him at
all hours of the day or night for tech-advice. Seems they like the net for
shopping, playing bridge, and emailing the kids.
